This is a very real issue for me too. My solution is to keep the PM database on my Powerbook, and mount the Powerbook drive on my desktop computer. I have gigabit ethernet, and PM is nearly as fast on my desktop as it is on my powerbook (ie, speed is appears to be limited by the PB disk drive).
I usually mount the PB disk using the Network item in the Finder (in OS 10.3), which creates at least one problem. The issue is that you can't delete attachments from within the Powermail App. If you either drag the attachment item to the trash (in the Dock) or click on it and hit the delete key, you get an error "folder not found." [It appears that this way of mounting causes problems for a variety of applications. See, eg, <http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/panther/bugs.html> for a possibly related bug.] What I do is create a folder on my Powerbook called, eg, "PB Trash", and keep the icon for that folder open on the desktop of my other machine. You can drag the attachment icon from a PowerMail window to the "PB Trash" icon in the Finder, and then later trash all the items in that folder. A second issue with this way of doing things, is that the Powerbook will NOT WARN YOU that it has drives mounted on other machines when you try to sleep it, or shut it down. And of course, it can't warn you if you just yank the Ethernet cable out of its back. Doing any of these things basically disconnects the Powermail database (and any other files you have open on your other machine) without allowing it to be "closed". This is a "Bad Thing"®. But it works for me. FWIW, my PM database is about 1GB.
