I think Nick is suggesting that you back up your database before you
compact it. Then, if the compact has been executed without any problems,
you can then backup the compacted database to CD. If something goes wrong
during compacting, you have nothing unless you saved a copy of the
database to find another method of dealing with salvaging your messages.
