Yes, my drives are in good health since I run DW, PTP, NDD, as well as
AppleDiskUtil including permission repair periodically.

That was one of the first things I tried but to no avail :-(

Thanks.  I just tried that, and I still have 19 invisible unread
messages.  What more scary is that it reveled that I have now 6 saved
messages unsent in my sent folder.  No wonder I never heard back from them!! 

Again, how long does low level rebuilt on a 260MB mail database should
take?  I don't think a couple minutes.
