Thanks so much! After making several back-ups to make *sure* I didn't lose anything, I tried your suggestion and it worked perfectly. Now instead of getting an instant response of no hits, even when there were hundreds of instances of whatever I was searching for, now I get -- like I did before this problem occurred -- an almost instant response showing all instances of whatever I search for. Because I depend so much on email -- including the "find" function -- I *really* appreciate your help. Thanks to you and to everyone on the list who pitched in. Ken
