At TVA SQN we presently use either Ludlum 2200 with an alpha probe or an Eberline SAC-4 for counting smears. We plan to move to the Ludlum 3030P soon.
Our limit is 50K dpm (beta/gamma) without supervisor approval. Usually we go ahead and count the smear on one of the above mentioned instruments. We are looking at possibly using a handheld alpha meter having a scaler function with a jig to count smears greater than 500K as this setup would be easier to decontaminate.
