At TVA SQN we presently use either Ludlum 2200 with an alpha probe or an
Eberline SAC-4 for counting smears. We plan to move to the Ludlum 3030P
soon.

Our limit is 50K dpm (beta/gamma) without supervisor approval. Usually
we go ahead and count the smear on one of the above mentioned
instruments. We are looking at possibly using a handheld alpha meter
having a scaler function with a jig to count smears greater than 500K as
this setup would be easier to decontaminate.

Duke Energy request to following information:

What do you use to count smears for alpha/ beta activity? Canberra
iSolo, Ludlum 3030P, other?

Do you have a limit on the activity (dpm) that can be counted using a
smear counter?

And if you have a limit on activity, what is the limit and how do you
count smears above the activity limit (beta) for alpha?
