BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. It's a standardized multi-OS platform for distributed computing, exactly like [EMAIL PROTECTED] and Prime95 have been doing for years, but it has a standardized server setup where users can decide what projects they want to contribute their CPU cycles to. It largely evolved out of the [EMAIL PROTECTED] project, when some of Berkeley's other research depts wanted to get access to the cpu cycles that SETI was getting. Some of the projects are organized by non-profits or University researchers, and others are run by commercial companies, and involve things like climate prediction, protein folding (for medical research), searching for extraterrestrial life, etc. Last I checked (quite a while ago) there were several dozen different projects that people could sign up for.
