Yes Grasshopper,
I appreciate all you have said, and not for one minute would I wish to
criticise digital. I love it too (just like when I learned to love The Bomb)

But is this not just re-inventing the wheel (with B&W) ?

I freely admit that producing stunning traditional prints is not financially
viable anymore. Clients and Photographers (on the whole) are just not
prepared to pay the real cost (in time and materials) for traditional prints
(Yet they'll happily sink lots of money at a digital pathway in order to
achieve a similar result. Weird eh ? The word 'sexy' springs to mind)

The very last printing job I undertook for someone else was for an
exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery - and it just didn't make
financial sense afterwards, when I analysed what I could charge and the
costs (in time and material) it took to produce the work.

But for personal work, its another story...

Record Rapid gave stunning results in the right hands.
Just to remind myself (its been 4 years).
Directions :
1.Place clean neg. in enlarger
2.Expose paper, dodging and burning to plan (Just been looking at some of my
old printing note-books. Takes me back !)
3. Play with in chemicals (and move around at the same time - low level
exercise routine and printing accomplished in one fell swoop !)
4. Hang up to air-dry for a day or two.
5. Enjoy

Doesn't sound that bad, eh ?

No computer. No profiles. No blocked ink-jets. No fading prints. No scans.
No histograms. No massive 'learning curves'. No manuals next to the bed. No
software charlatans. No expanding waist-line due to remaining motionless for
hours in front of a screen. No crooked neck. No rotation of jpeg hassles. No
burnt out highlights. The list is as long as my copy of Real World PhotoShop
7" !

Just a bulb, timer, lens, neg. carrier, piece of paper, trays and chemicals.
Its a bargain !

Or is it just me ?

Best wishes to you all,
David
