I do mostly Editorial assignments and have been supplying digital files to
clients mostly as "raw" unretouched/untweaked Images. In cases where the
client is relatively new to accepting work as CDrom, or I know the work will
benefit from some Tweaking in Pshop, I'll supply one or two Tweaked Images
to the client on the Cd, show the cost on the Invoice and "Complimentary
sample" ie Free. this way the client can see the improvements possible and
have an Idea of cost. In cases where there are only one or two Images I'll
supply a smalller LoRes sample, sometimes with a small Inkjet print as a
reference.
Like McDonalds upselling- Willl you have fries with that?
I must admit this technique hasn't initiated a lot of extra Pshop work
(which is handy on those rainy days!). But I still do it because I think
that its important the client knows what your capable of doing, even if he's
quite happy with the straight files. Where it has worked is when the client
thinks my Input as the photographer is more important than the designer etc.
After all I was there and know how its supposed to look-ie wierd mixed
lightsource environments.
Sometimes I have gotten carried away and spent stupid amounts of time
tweaking Images because I KNOW I can make it that much better.
I have noticed that clients do tend to use the tweaked files, even if they
are not getting other images done, so it does give me the ability to
influence which Image is used as I tend to tweak my favorites anyway.
Thats my opinion anyway!
