Hi,
The loss of charging for film and processing is a major blow.
Apart from anything else, it covered all the miniscule costs and out of pocket expenses that you incur on a shoot, but cant charge.
Time spent processing Digital photography files after a shoot should be charged for.........
Everyone else in the business world charges for time spent on a job!!
I always ask the client if they want me to oversee the digital retouching. If the answer is yes I estimate the number of days (depending upon length of the shoot). I then charge half to one third of my day rate, and all my expenses (including hotels if I am in another country).
This gives the client the option of me handling the retouching, or paying me to looking over the shoulder of their designated retoucher.
Photographs from film or digital files still need processing for reproduction.
All time and money, why give your time away for free?
Suggestion, why not set an hourly or daily rate that will compensate you for your time, and is comparable to your mark up on film and processing?
These observations are aimed at Advertising photographers, editorial is another can of worms.
Drawing a line in the sand and setting industry standards has never been a photographers strong point, there is always someone willing to do a deal and go behind everyones back out of financial greed or desperation.
