Actually as I understand it there are more actual pixels than effective
pixels! (Effective pixels here are as in the now accepted sense not the
original marketing of the Fuji S1) You take four actual pixels two
sensitive to green, one sensitive to red and one sensitive to blue, to a
simple photographer (particularly the flat earthers!) that would make
one usable 24 or more bit RGB pixel. That would throw away some useful
data so then you calculate the colour and density of each of those
actual physical pixels by looking at the four adjoining pixels. The
pixels on the edges of the CCD (or presumably CMOS?) don�t have four
adjoining pixels for these calculations so are only used for their
contribution as 'adjoining pixels' hence the total 'effective pixels'
are less than the total actual pixels.

So it is worth noting that the pixels in the file are not the pixels in
the CCD unless you have a high end three pass back, Fuji just stretch
them a little further than the others
