Bernadette, what does 'died' mean--do you mean the whole thing just went
out like a light, or the hard disk span down, or what? Presumably you
have something on the screen from what you say below?

Do you mean you ran fsck -y; if you did, did it say that the disk
appeard to be OK?

Sorry for all the questions, but do you mean you re-installed OS X and
OS 9, or just booted from the CDs?

Have you tried booting from the OS X CD and running Disk Utility (from
the menu bar, not the installer pane)? It's a way of running a whole set
of tests that fsck is a subset of. You can also choose to 'repair
permissions' while you're there, which can't hurt.

Can you do anything with the machine--for instance, is the Dock visible
and does it work--can you launch any applications?
