Can you remember what the error messages were Bob?

Have tried booting with Command-S held down to do an fsck? If you have
more than one partition, have you tried booting with the option key
down? This should (I think) give you the option to start off either
partition, although if the disk can't be seen I wouldn't hold out too
much hope.
