Have you tried connecting your "sad Mac" to your happy Mac via a firewire cable and then booting the sad Mac in Target Disk mode? (hold down T while starting up.) If the sad Mac's HD is running, it should appear on the other's desktop and be available to transfer files from.
Since I'm still on 9, don't know for sure if this works the same in 10. > I wonder if the problem started with the USB lead to the printer. The 2100 > has only a two pin mains plug. I have a vague idea that ink spray can cause > static which a lack of earth could make worse. The USB cable has a metal shielded jacket and plugs.
