FYI there's an interesting Canon 1Ds vs 6x7 piece here...

Well worth a read, IMO.
Dear Peter

Yes it is interesting. I had a good read and look when this site was mentioned on Prodig a week or so ago, and would venture the following comments.

I wonder why in comparative tests no attempt seems to made to achieve a better balance so that we have a less distracting comparison of the images put forward to evaluation?

The ressed up shot of the Canon 1D shows some unwelcome USM effects whilst the comparative Pentax shot does not. The follow on shot of crud on the Pentax shot shows the problem many experience with desktop CCD scanners, or scanners operated in as less than optimum environment.

It's particularly interesting to compare the drum scan with the digital capture. This bears out what I think I have been saying for some time regarding quality of scans. Although CCD scanners are convenient and can produce reasonable to good results with a minimum of training, they simply are no match for the best output from a correctly operated and profiled drum scanner working at it's optimum ability. Whilst the drum scan shown shows in some ways how the drum scores, it is still only part of the story.

As regards the crud seen on the scans in the examples shown, this simply is not a feature in good drum scanning. I cannot help wondering at the cost involved for the time many have to spend in cleaning up their scans that could be eliminated.

Cheers

Richard
