I think keeping drum scans is slightly different to keeping digital files.

A drum scan is a digital file. 

I might not have 1,000s, more like 2,000 and it is a problem storing them 
all. I heard that one photographer bought 20 big hard disks and sent 
thousands of files to his agents round the world that way. 

There is another factor over using Jpegs as a standard. A couple of years ago 
a company claiming to own the copyright looked into charging a royalty for 
every use of Jpegs. This scared the stock photo industry. At the same time 
there were other Jpeg like compression systems but no one has jumped into 
using them on a large scale. Archives saved as TIFFS can always be converted 
to new style formats but some users are wary of Jpeg > other compression 
format conversions.
