I used to own a LaCie drive (a few years ago) and the instructions with the
drive were so crap, that I thought I had to use Silverlining to format it. N
you don't. You can use virtually any formatting software. Personally ever
since I found that out, I've used MacOS's own formatting utility. It works
and never seems to give the same problems that many people have.

The only advantage to using a third party formatting, is a possible speed
boost (check BareFeats site) However I seem to remember its so small as to
not really be worth the agro.

Also If you're running OSX. Then, I'm pretty sure that most of the tech
sites would say don't use Norton. It was once a great program (hell I
remember the first version on the first ever IBM PC, I loved it). But it
doesn't do anything good on a Mac running OSX. Check MacFixIt for more info
on this.

I'd suggest reformatting with the HD Utility in OS9/OSX (if of course you're
on a Mac), then see how it goes. If you want to check your disk with
anything, use the HD Utility again. Check First Aid and Permissions. If you
want third party, you can't beat Disk Warrior for what it does.
