Isn't that why we're all here Derek? If everything worked 'like it should' then there may not be any need for colour management etc?! In the UK, the 2100 is shipped with Grey Balancer software... some love it, many hate it... but it is a tool designed to neutralise the greyscale. Is it possible you were seeing metamerism of the inks? Epson did improve these inks in terms of reduced metamerism... but it is still there.
