There is also a program there called 'Process Viewer' that will give you a readout of CPU & memory usage - for example Lightwave is currently using 182% of the cpu's (1.4Ghz) & 67 % of the (2G's) of memory on my machine
In the days of system 9 I would agree it was preferable to use one program at a time & I used to use a number of machines simultaneously, but those days are history - it is incredible the way OSX can cope with running Photoshop/Lightwave/mail/vuescan/safari etc. seamlessly & all at the same time. Without crashing (well Ok Lightwave crashes now & again - but now it doesn't take anything with it!)

Perhaps when computers and their operating syatems become more competant I
will have just 2 machines,one in use and a standbye system but judging by
the rapidiy of both hardware and software changes,fixes and upgrades on Macs
and PCs I suspect that wont be for some years.
