A disadvantage would be 2 additional color conversions, but this might be
somewhat dependent on the version of Photoshop.

Is selecting mode LAB a colour conversion? I understand that it is the same information as RGB but dealt with in a different way. I've just tested a few multiple conversions, LAB and CMYK, and LAB conversions don't seem to show the deterioration that CMYK obviously does.

There was a query on another list a week or so ago about achieving a certain type of colour effect. I can't find the exact description but from memory it was that type of full colour, not-quite-duo-tone, with one overall colour emphasis but with highlights still clear. Hard to do in RGB alone but I just tried in LAB and it came close easier.
