The techniques look good. I've always used calculations to do B/W from RGB images, as you can control which channels to mix, what opacity and what blend. You can also (with the aid of an alpha channel), select different parts of an image to blend....
I guess everyone has their own ways of doing things..... some people I know would not go anywhere but the channel mixer.....
