Dear List

Introduction.....
Been lurking long enough (can't admit to how long...)
I'm based in Manchester England, working mainly in Fashion, Advertising and
Design.
Have been dipping my toe in the digital waters for about two years now.
(albeit off and on).
Like most people I was extremely sceptical, having been bought up with the
smell of acetic acid in the mornings....(and in Manchester, Charlie has
never surfed)

I still have a few problems concerning the look and feel of a silver
gelatine print to something spat out of the ink jet - but hey I'm old enough
to be called old fashioned!
But slowly I have been sucked into the amazing world of silicon....and what
do you know...three years down the line I'm still sat in front of this
riveting screen!
I'm still convinced that a few years ago I took more pictures!
But I am also convinced that this damned machine will become a slave to me
rather than me being a slave to the damned machine!.....one day....we live
in hope:)

....I'm afraid that for a while I'll be asking more questions than answering
them.... methinks!

Sharpening?
Can anybody explain to me the pitfalls as regarding applying USM to Raw
files before we bring them into Photoshop?
What is the difference between that and applying USM after you've made the
TIFF?

I have read the threads concerning not applying USM, and leaving it to the
repro people if we are not providing pre-press files.
So far I have only been supplying RGBs.

I've been on the Canon D60 for the 6/9 months and in April took the plunge
with a Phase One H101 on a new Hasselblad H1.
Both pieces of software and hardware, the Canon and the Phase One, have
presently, their USM turned off for capture and processing.
Presently with Mac OS X (Jaguar) on a Titanium G4 and a now what seems
antiquated Blue and White G3 - Santa's already got the request for the G5
for Xmas!

(Have only just started putting the Capture One DSLR for the D60 through its
paces as only available on PC [Widows XP:)] at the moment - I'm going
through the learning curve with the PC as I have been on Macs for the past
half dozen years)

So... are there any advantages/disadvantages to applying USM before we
process the Raw file?

Simple Maths please, if thats at all possible, in the Queen's English.
(quite something, coming from a republican! :)
Remember its predominantly fashion and portraiture... and I am prone to the
occasional blonde moment:)
