Thanks for the suggestion. I had a look on the drive, but there don't appear to be any switches.
Correct, there won't be on the type of drive you are dealing with... one that came out of you iBook. Those jumpers will be found on the types of drives common to desktop computers. I've done exactly what you're trying several times. I've removed internal Powerbook drives and placed them in external cases. Usually it works perfectly. Plug in the now external drive and it mounts and its contents appear just as they did when it was an internal drive. You shouldn't need to reformat. When I have run into problems it was caused by one of two things. Maybe you have a poor connection where the case circuit board plugs into the drive. Make sure its plugged in completely and that no pins are bent or mis-aligned. The other thing that might be causing a problem is just bad hardware on the circuit board in the external case.
