In one of my previous lives I used to be an assistant and, in my current one
an employer of them.

Fortunately, whilst I was in the former, the people I worked for never
regarded me as surplus to requirements.

Assistants may well be disposable but, never indispensable - otherwise you
wouldn't have one there in the first place.

Since starting in this business - a good few years ago & having assisted
people using some rather ancient equipment - I have never had a problem with
any flash pack power supplies or, the requirement to switch off with
anything other than a naked digit. If one feels the need to stand clear,
other than when there is an obvious fault, you patently haven't learnt how
to operate the said equipment.

In the same way in which you do not conduct under the car mechanics whilst
relying on the manufactures spare wheel jack to hold the vehicle up in
place. (Unless you have a death wish of course).

What I believe the AoP / Image Magazine and indeed Strobex are looking for
here are positive anecdotal stories.

By the way: If you do use surplus assistants, make sure you carry a large
liability insurance cover or stick to tungsten. Although, preferably not 3
phase as 440v does a bit more then just sling you across the studio floor.
