I have an older full size Ford van that I use exactly as you describe.
Its a handy way to shoot from a little different perspective. I don't
use any kind of rack at all. With careful placement of where I stand
it supports me just fine without distorting the roof. The Windstar
being smaller/lighter may not work as well. If you really need some
sort of rack/platform I'd look for some of the rack systems sold for
transporting canoes and such. Just attach a piece of sturdy plywood
across the supports that would normally hold the boat. Those racks are
fairly inexpensive and can be quite strong. It will be easy to remove
when you don't need it.

I plan to do quite a lot of shooting for coffee growers, nurseries and
flower growers in this area. I want to mount a platform on the top of
my 1995 Ford Windstar van, so that I can drive into the fields and get
high aspect shots without messing with a folding ladder or cherry
picker.
