Hi Prodig people:
I've been meaning to write about this for a while.
For a monitor I'd recommend color-solutions basIColor Display SW, from
what I've seen it trounces the opposition. ( because I like it so much
and clients found it painful to import direct from Germany, I've
committed to pre buying a bunch with their nice Squid device and have
stock).
The basICColor Display SW also works with the various iOnes
(Pro/Photo/Publish/Monitor - not yet the iOne Display), Sequel Chroma 4, DTP 41
and the Spectrolino to name a few. Color Solutions like the iOne
Monitor device so much we can still get it from them - as I understand
Gretag have continued limited production just for them.
Got a supported device? (not the Spyder I'm afraid) - There is a demo
link on my website.
In my work at City of Westminster College I recently helped set up 2
old iMacs, 2 PC's with XP, 3 G4 macs with 17 LCD and 2 x eMac. With the
right settings they were very close, a lot closer than I'd expected as
I'd heard of disappointing results on an eMac. I'm not sating the emac
becomes a Cinema display, but the results are very good.
Color solutions have a new update (for mac at the moment) to 2.5.6,
it's free to current users and has features which move it yet another
peg. There are now 13 control points on the curves, it means slower but
better calibration. There is a new linear option which replaces the
choice of gammas and the attendant need to experiment and choose the
most suitable gamma for your hardware. All big steps forward.
One very advanced feature is gamma compression, most of you will be
aware that the monitor clips high gamut colours from big workingspaces
- well Color_Solutions have a solution. You can make an alternative
calibration to your working one which will reveal those tonal details
in out of gamut colours when needed. It's a sophisticated option and
why and when to use it takes a bit of understanding but it is very
useful once understood.
