The PS view proof image should look pretty much like the final print
using that profile.
Have you by any chance got 'Preserve colour numbers' checked? If so
uncheck it.
If its unchecked already and the soft proof looks very different likely
the profile is not very good.

On the contrary, we very much care what it looks like as the View soft
proof lets us see on screen what the print should look like on paper.

Definitely muddy waters !
The View soft proof is not restricted to cmyk but is available for all
output profiles including displays (eg what will image look like on PC
or MAC) and rgb printers eg you can soft proof the effect of any profile
on the image.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer rather than more murky <BG>
