As Steve Bradshaw pointed out, this thread is incidental to but not on the Topic of Digital Imaging per se.

Therefore please link any further messages in this thread specifically to the special needs/requirements of copyright or ownership as they might uniquely effect Digital Imaging.

Dear Ed

There have been some interesting threads on other lists concerning copyright and digital capture. IMHO there is a host of misinformation and if photographers don't generally understand copyright related to film some of the digital issues will be an even greater minefield.

In the UK copyright infringement actions often depend on a simple proof of ownership of copyright. Some cases have involved photographers producing the original negatives or strips of transparencies from either side of the disputed image.

Working digitally will take away the tangible original. Unless we spend a fortune on "use once" CF cards we will need to prove ownership by other means. Digital manipulation enables many to claim a digital file as theirs. Anyone who read about any of the technology Signum use to verify speed camera pictures cannot be tampered with will see it is a complex subject. I manipulate many of my pictures and because of up coming problems with PDF workflows will be deleting EXIF info as a matter of course.

Just how we identify our images as ours in a digital age will be a problem

What makes matters worse is the way that "copyright" and "right of reproduction" are treated as one and the same. Essentially ownership of the copyright in an image gives you the right to sell rights of reproduction. These can be described anyway the two parties decide, outright or one time only etc..

Regards

Bob
