I'm about to buy a 7600...should I have custom profiles? should I have a
software rip?

I went through the same decision process several months ago. I spent the money that would have gone to a RIP on getting a 9600 instead. I've been VERY pleased with the decision. There are some very good canned profiles available from Epson for their inks/papers and these may serve you very well. I use an EyeOne Photo package for building custom profiles for the 9600 through its standard driver. This printer (and the 7600) with Ultrachrome inks are MUCH easier to profile well through the standard driver than any other Epson I've had experience with. The additional light black ink makes a huge difference in the ability to get good neutrals from highlight to shadow; and to get smooth shadow transitions. Use a RIP for high volume situations where you need productivity features such as auto nesting of images onto a page; or for situations where you must print a lot of Postscript art; or where you absolutely must have CMYK controls. For most photographers doing photographic output, none of the above apply.
