I am intrigued to know if these new controls allow one to obtain results which were simply not possible with PS 7?

The answer is generally, yes. You can make similar changes using Curves, but at the extremes Stephen Marsh's comments over the similarity to USM come into play - the effect of haloes can be a giveaway to over exuberant use of this new tool. But, used with care it is far easier to achieve success than with Curves, and a small haloing (if that is a word!) can actually achieve a perceived sharpening.

I have some images with extreme ranges of tone that with judicious use of Shadow/Highlight have captured deep shadow detail and superb highlight detail in landscapes and views through tunnelled trees to well-lit white cottages, that could only have previously been achieved by either two exposures made using a tripod, or two versions of a RAW file layered and masked in Photoshop.

If I were asked for my vote for the best single new feature in this version it would have to be this one - what was really ironic was that prior to starting the beta this time around I was astounding myself with the power of Calculations to achieve printable ranges of tone from digital image files with long ranges, then suddenly Adobe give me this level of control in one tool!
