Greetings,

I've just been playing with the Shadow/Highlight tool in CS to make some
sense of the various settings and thought I'd share my findings.

I created a step wedge producing 11 bands of grey from 0% to 100% black. I
then applied the S/H tool at various settings and noted the change in
density using the Info Palette.

It turns out that the tonal width setting is quite accurate. In practice,
if I wanted to lighten the shadows, I'd click on the lightest part of the
image that I wanted affected using Curves (displaying 10% increments), and
transfer that value to the tonal width setting. Amount would be adjusted by
eye.

When lightening shadows, pure black remains pure black. Other than pure
black, the darkest areas receive the greatest degree of lightening and this
tapers off to no increase when you exceed the tonal width.

I'm not sure about the pixel width yet (obviously had no effect on the
wedge) -- that'll depend on subject matter.

Great tool !
