Dear List

A few weeks ago I posted a problem concerning the difficulties I was having
in installing an Imacon PIII on my PC/XP computer. Having upgraded the PC
with a SCSI card, more memory, and a faster processor, I found that the PC
would die part way through the boot with a very dim screen. If I left the
Imacon switched off, the boot completed successfully.

I got a huge number of replies to this problem, and unfortunately on this
occasion none of them worked. Initially I took the view that it was a
software problem and decided to reformat the system disc and reinstall
everything. Also, someone suggested that there could be a conflict in my
system due to the two scanners (I also have a Coolscan) that were now
installed on it, and that if I wiped the "slate clean", and only installed
the PIII, I may well find the boot would complete and the PIII would work.

At the end of that process XP still would not boot if I had the PIII
switched on. Even worse was to follow. I had some pressing scanning to do,
and I was glad I still had my Coolscan. However, it chose just this moment,
after two years of faithful service to have a break down! It is now at
Nikon for intensive care.

Finally, hardware components were changed one at a time. With the boot
failing on a very dim screen, it could have been the power supply, as was
suggested by Ian Reynolds, and that was replaced with a higher wattage
unit, but that made no difference. Eventually the SCSI card was replaced.
It was a Tekram SCSI that had been fitted, and when that was replaced with
an Adaptec SCSI, all was well, and my PC, the PIII, and not least myself,
lived happily ever after, or so I hope!

Whether the particular Tekram I had was faulty, or whether it was somehow
incompatible with the PIII/XP combination I'll never know, but after all the
hassle I've had over this, I would opt for an Adaptec SCSI if ever faced
with a similar upgrade in future.

Thanks again to everyone who tried to help with the problem.
