Is the BasICColor unit good?

The BasICC color software beats anything else I've tried for accurately calibrating LCDs. I've got a 20" Cinema display and Sony 17 inch LCD. It's worked well on both of those. I'm using an EyeOne spectro as the instrument. The EyeOne and EyeOne Match software do a great job with CRTs but leave a bit to be desired with LCDs. BasICColor will work with several different instruments; or you can buy it with their instrument for a very reasonable price. In fairness, I've used OptiCal for years on various CRTs with great success but I've not tried it or any other ColorVision products on LCDs as I don't have compatible hardware.
