Paul

If you are worried about losing the precise edge of a mask when you load it
as a selection and then combine it, there is another way of merging masks
but it ain't exactly easy...well, not for dunces like me but for the clever
people at Adobe, it is a breeze...take a deep breath and...use Image >
Calculations to grab the mask from two layers and then output it as an alpha
channel.

As a first step, use Calculations to output the mask from one layer as an
alpha channel. *Select the new alpha channel. Call up Calculations again but
change the settings to:

Source 1
Layer: Next layer
Channel: Layer mask

Source 2
Layer: Next layer
Channel: Alpha 1

Mask
Layer: Next layer
Channel: Alpha 1

Result
New Channel

Your masks should combine nicely into one alpha channel. Keep repeating the
process. When finished, delete the alphas that you don't need.

*Haven't got time to explain it in more detail but you should be able to see
the results in the document window as you select items from the popup menus
in Calculations provided you clicked on the first alpha channel as outlined
above.

There are other permutations in Calculations that you can use but the above
is fairly straight forward...

Beware, the above hasn't been tested on delicate masks but it should work.
If it doesn't let us know, if it does, let us know.

HTH.
