Shangara, unfortunately detailed examination suggests that the method doesnt quite do what I want. For some reason the final, composite mask has a slightly different size to the individual works. I have tried filters->other->minimize but it doesnt quite give the subtle hand retouched edges which I created. Its close but no cigar.
I have tried composing with multiply and add. Same result each time. Maybe its a question of finding the right compositing method? I have a new workflow which avoids the problem I created for myself... so I'll just have to hang on to one or two 1.2 GB files which contain 20 or so layers+masks and make sure I don't create such bloated files in future.
