Shangara,

unfortunately detailed examination suggests that the method doesnt quite do
what I want. For some reason the final, composite mask has a slightly
different size to the individual works. I have tried
filters->other->minimize but it doesnt quite give the subtle hand retouched
edges which I created. Its close but no cigar.

I have tried composing with multiply and add. Same result each time. Maybe
its a question of finding the right compositing method?

I have a new workflow which avoids the problem I created for myself... so
I'll just have to hang on to one or two 1.2 GB files which contain 20 or so
layers+masks and make sure I don't create such bloated files in future.
