I have several years experience with this setup.

Where are you located??

If in the US, you need to get in touch with ecrix, and will probably have to send both the machine and the tape back to them for service. They 'may' be able to rebuild the tape for you.

First however, a book came with the device. There is a troubleshooting section that gives detailed information about the state of the device based on the colors of the front panel lights in various configurations. Refer to that, and give that information to ecrix tech support when you call. They will expect you to send them the machine. If its under warranty, they will replace it. If its out of warranty, they will want a credit card number or a check.
Hopefully, you have been running the Cleaning tape when Dantz Retrospect tells you its time.

Don't depend on 'talking to various people', if they don't have experience with this exact setup. Even tho' you are getting a scary message....the message says: DEVICE TROUBLE. Which may NOT be tape corruption, but, indeed, a mechanical problem. Error 212, if I remember correctly is mechanical, not media. (I am no longer in Texas, but have "semi" retired and living back home in Hawaii, so don't have responsibility for this device any longer.)

Are you able to eject the tape?? Be sure to send this tape back with the device and have ecrix check it. Instructions in the manual covers removing the tape. If its really, really stuck, leave it for tech support to remove. I have actually had to open the case, and then the drive case in order to remove the tape.

As far as it "should not currupt...", Dr. Murphy is in charge here. Its a mechanical device. Eventually, they have mechanical problems. "What can go wrong, WILL go wrong".

Overall, in three+ years....I had to send a unit back for service twice. When you stop and consider that this device is a high-speed, TAPE recorder, and it is turned ON 24/7, it is quite reliable. You "should", periodically test the backup tapes, and make sure they verify a "RESTORE".

This has been running fine for the last year until tonight when I need to
get info from one of the tapes. It tells me " contents unrecognizable" when
trying to retrieve info . when i took a look at the log it told me that
yesterday highlighted in red DEVICE TROUBLE "4-BACKUPSET B (002) ERROR 212
( MEDIA ERASED) . I have spoken to various people and it seems that the tape
is corrupt. Surely a backup system should not corrupt. there seems little
point in using it if it does. Any soloutions greatly recieved
