If it is a corrupt tape you're probably stuffed. In Retrospect there are tools to rebuild catalogues but it sounds like that's not going to help. Tapes are usually OK. We have a 13 year old DAT archive which is fine but occasionally media can be bad out of the box or corrupts with use. The only lesson is to make 2 tape backups, store one offsite plus make regular copies of your catalogues onto another computer or 2. Works for us.
