Is there a reason for your reluctance? Pressure etc? Have you used dig. in heavy weather on the surface?
Hi John,
No, not reluctance whatsoever, just 2500 - 3000 (plus) I don't have! The Housing I have at the moment for my film SRL is water tight up to 72 metres, when usually (recreational diving) the deepest allowed is 42 metres!
It's called 'recreational diving', but that's the level any professional (or not) photographer do, in fact I'm professional diver but the rule applies the same!
Regarding heavy heather, I haven't tried my dig. in the rain as I know what's going to happen and I only got it recently!
When diving with my film SLR, housed, there's no pressure problem at all, but the waters can be freezing cold to the point of not feeling either my fingers tips or my toes or both! And in UK waters the visibility may well be 20 cm in front of my eyes 'diving in soup' as sometimes is said.
Strong currents can drag me away unexpectedly ruining the all dive, then surface intervals between dives are sometimes hours, may be required (sometimes enforced) to get rid of the Nitrogen on my body. If not all, finding a subject that may not exist or be available when I need/want, then once I've found it, I only have a split of second to shoot it (if the subject is in motion, which is 90% of the times) also what I had found more difficult when I first started in Sydney, was the surge (currents in both directions) pushing me back and forward! No tripods or steady feet on the ground as at the surface, I'm basically 'neutral buoyant' as in a space ship and trying to be still to focus the subject, it can be very tricky!
So, basically I spend twice as much film UW than at the surface, as the conditions are more unpredictable and subject to change more suddenly.
But, when I get one good photo of a 36 roll, not only is pure joy to be able to record such moment in the deep, it also makes it doubly worth it !
