because I know that I have a burgeoning collection of CD backups and the
thought of them 'expiring' fills me with cold horror. I did a lot of
homework in selecting a brand with a reasonably proven life term but
I've now considered due to the number of these discs that I should copy
them onto DVD and at a ratio of 6/7:1, it'll make things a lot neater.
What is everyone else doing? Does anyone have any thoughts?
Hi Alex and All,
The hassle with CD/DVD, added to what had been told here by others subscribers, is they are not easily reachable and erasable.
I made a comparison to cost DVD versus HD storage, they are the same (Apple DVD to FW LaCie 120,250 GB), so I am thinking to set a RAID in mirroring mode of three 250 GB HD, if one fail I would be able to replace it by an other without loosing any data, a friend of mine had experienced this. It seems that the RAID format doesn't need any de-fragment or rebuilt directory.
With an asset management soft like Cumulus I should be able to reach, erase, move the files.
Have some of you tested the RAID set up? Any advices? Precautions?
When they work, they are very very good. (and good ones are VERY expensive.) However, you'll need an IT Department to mess with it, when it decides NOT to work.
Also, it is magnetic media. Subject to all the Dr. Murphys' "features" of magnetic media.
WHY would you ever want to erase archived storage media, (CD or DVD)?? The cost of GOOD, high-quality, bulk Writeable CD's is down below 80 US. The cost of writeable DVD's of high-quality is dropping dramatically, practically by the day.
AGAIN....I reiterate: redundant magnetic media is great for backups.
You want to write ARCHIVES to the closest thing you can find to granite. Right now, that is CD or DVD media. Like it or not.
I've been at this since 1984, I've served as Sys Admin to large departments of graphic artists in professional design studios and ad agencies. I've experienced the ups and downs of several RAID systems.
They are good backup systems.
But they are NOT archival media.
