I know your a PC man, but the mac option is really very good. Also mac's don't age as fast and retain their S/H value better.
If you try www.cancomuk.com you can get a refurbished 12 power book for 999GBP + VAT (I have one - excellent) is all you need for shooting dig tethered. Mac's are much better at just letting you plug things into them without a fuss. You can then transfer everything to your PC via the ether net port (100T). If you want a faster connection the 15 inch power book has 1000T ethernet.
