Hi Richard Personally my vote is yes. It will depend upon how long you are "away" for and how many cf/card/microdrive/whatever you have invested in. Other than the most simple of shoots/trips I take a Sony Vaio - it has build in firewire and a decent screen, and (often) an external cd/dvd burner for extended storage and safety. The whole package is reasonably compact and goes in my (large) Lowe equipment backpack.
I actually ran out of capacity (on the laptop) shooting in the Rockies in July, having left the DVD burner in Vancouver to cut down on weight mid-trip!
