I wouldn't say it's essential for location work. It depends on what you're shooting and you and your clients needs. For myself, I wouldn't be able to work without a laptop. I don't shoot tethered (you need to use the mains adapter for that as the current drain when tethered is considerable) I simply dump the images via a Firewire Card reader. You'll get used to assessing the images on camera after a while so apart from studio shooting I don't really need tethered shooting.
