The noise, or grain, in the shadows, may be inherent in scanning negs.
That is, so much tonal info is contained in a neg (~14 f/stops), much more
contrast needs to be applied relative to a chrome.  This extra contrast will
enhance grain/noise.

The above makes a lot of sence.
I have tried Vuescan demo (several times) but found it very frustrating to
use and crashed on me.
As I mentioned before the invert method is the best option I have found and
Im fairly happy with the results (9 times out of 10) it's just the noisey
shadows that's a problem.
Maybe I need to give vuescan another go but I expect I will still need to
fiddle a fair bit and when I have 40 images to scan to 100mb then retouch
time is an issue.
