tonal info in color negs. I learnt back in the analogue days that transparencies offer a higher tonal range than negs.
And why would the fact that there is a bigger tonal range lead to the conclusion that more contrast needs to be applied? Or am I mixing tonal info and tonal range here? Is tonal info of up to 14 fstops meant in a way as there can be a difference of 14 fstops between the diffuse highlight and the shadows?

Hi all,
I'm just wondering, as a long time negative scanner (film, not attitude!), whether the idea that trans. film has a higher tonal range than neg. dates back to the days when "printers" would either scan a slide or a print ONLY. Prints obviously can never compete with a film original.

O.K. a negative scan will need a little tweeking after scanning, but I find the Minolta Dimage software for 35mm and Silverfast for roll & sheet film are superb, with just minor work on the curves required in PS.

Cheers,
John
