Thanks, everyone, for your input. I now know so much more about the theory behind inkjet printing which will help me greatly in improving my output.
Shangara, I use Ilford's Studio system which involves their profiles with their media using an Onyx RIP. As this thread developed, I mailed them to ask what their recommended res was when sending images to the RIP. Whatever their answer, it does seem that image prep in PS should be done at 360dpi.It can then be converted before printing to the RIP's optimum dpi so that no further interpolation needs to be done. In the final analysis, it is how good the client's final print looks, both close up and at the proper viewing distance, that counts. I will be experimenting with my output dpi, at all our print sizes, over the next few weeks to see if the conclusions from this afternoon's test can be sustained. If there is the slightest doubt about the quality at 180 dpi, I can always revert to 360 - after all, I now have the computer firepower to do so!! Thanks again.
