There is a fairly easy way to figure out if you are seeing ghosts.

Make a white square on your image (720 ppi) crank up the shape tool and make
a "sun" with Lines of 1, 2 and 3 px wide that are coming from the centre
going outwards - like the rays on a comic book sun.

Now rotate these lines pairs by a few degrees around the centre, until you
have at least a half circle (180 degrees).

Make a few duplicates of this image and resize a copy to any resolution
(PPI) you want to test and rasterize the shape vectors.

Then print each image.

Look closely at each angle of the lines and see if there is any difference.
There may be on some lines but not on others.

This may not be visible on regular images, but then again it may.

I assume this is not about finding the best resolution for a single image,
but rather the least amount of resolution needed for the printer in
general...
