Annette I'm actually glad I didn't buy stock in NCP. I was pointed to a free utility called MacJanitor(http://www.versionracker.com). I run it fairly regularly and have not experienced any slowdowns since (it "cleans" a lot of scripts and one of these maybe causing your scanner to slow down if you shut down your Mac regularly).
