An alternative to LAB is favoured by many RGB and even more so, CMYK users - fades or layer blends in COLOR mode (a HS type simulation, similar to how LAB separates colour from tone). This overcomes many issues with using LAB for such things as simple sharpening (luminosity blend/fades), or for colour noise/artifact reduction (color blend/fades). The LAB approach lets one see the individual colour component channels and damage while one edits, the B can often have more edits applied than the A channel. There are pros/cons for each approach and many viewpoints.
