Hi

I'm struggling with linearising an Epson 1290 and subsequent profiling. I've
previously profiled an 1160 quite successfully (mind you I did have Neil
Barstow standing behing me). In general I'm down to varying one parameter
with a resulting improvement to one or some colours, but overall it just
doesn't look right, and certain colours are way off. Tried several straight
and adjusted Epson driver linearising settings, but the test target always
prints very dark. In desperation I've been 'reading the ***ing manual' and
it says Preserve Gray Plus is the default (Eye One Pro / ProfileMakerPro
415). Tried it with a 'large' profile with little difference.

Now a new problem has appeared - something weird has happened in the Color
Settings in PShop CS. 'Col Management Off' has disappeared from the list and
'Europ Prep Defaults' been replaced with 'Europ with EktachromeSpace', so I
can't get back to the original list options. I'd been using Col Man Off for
linearising and Europ Prep Defaults with the working space changed to
Ektachrome for printing with a profile. Also Adobe Help says Col Management
cannot be turned off completely -

"Color Management Off - Does not turn the Photoshop color management system
off (the color management system cannot be turned off entirely). Instead,
this option tells the color management system to use passive color
management techniques to emulate the behavior of applications that do not
support color management. Although working space profiles are considered
when converting colors between color spaces, Color Management Off does not
tag documents with profiles. You can use this option for content that will
be output on video or as on-screen presentations. Do not use this option if
you work mostly with documents that are tagged with color profiles." Can
anyone point me at information as to what these passive techniques are?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.
