Hi Colin
The man to trust did indeed turn out to be Benedikt Schmitt. When I phoned
tech support, I was connected to someone who knew, pardon my French, effall
about the subject. His reply was he had never heard of the problem. When I
said I had trouble understanding his English, his reply was I was the first
one! Hmmm....probably the first one to tell but that's not the same thing...
Anyway, I contacted Herr Schmitt but, unfortunately, he was on hols and I
was redirected to another tech. This one was slightly more informed but not
that much more. He told me to open the Diagnostics from the Help menu and to
see if everything was behaving normally but neglected to tell me what I
should look out for. I passed on my observations and waited...
I then re-installed Panther from scratch, in case the problem lay with the
OS; I had only done an archive install. That was a good half day wasted
because the problem was still there after the install. When I got back to
him, fortunately, he was now on hols and Herr Schmitt was back. He told me
to open the Diagnostics in advanced mode by holding down the Opt key and to
look at the pen pressure when it's not resting on the pad, which should be
0-6. Mine was reading 13+. He concluded the pen was faulty but as they do
not repair pens, I would have to buy a new one. I ordered one and it arrived
this morning and all seems to be back to normal.
I also received another email from the tech who had gone on hols and he said
to send them the pen and the pad for servicing. Herr Schmitt had already
informed me that they do not repair pens and that the pad was OK as it was
reading the X, Y co-ordinates OK. So, again, had I listened to the other
tech, I would be without a pen and pad for 10-14 days and still have to
purchase a new pen.
Hope the above helps someone...
