Hi David,

Sharpening to correct for softness of digital capture.

Most of my work is with portraits, which I soften instead of sharpen, but
there is an occasional commercial wide angle assignment that needs it.

There are some good sharpening ideas for portraits in Katrin Eismann's great book 'Photoshop Restoration & Retouching'. Sharpening certain elements eg eyes can help the image look sharper without nasty digital side effects such as making skin look like 'louie the lizard' (as Dan Magulis calls it!). Dans' book 'Professional Photoshop' is also good; looking at things from Dans unique viewpoint. Another good source of sharpening info is 'Real World Photoshop' which has a great tutorial on double pass sharpening.......

As William Curwin says, there is no quick and easy answer. Every digital image presents its own problems and solutions and learning a variety of skills and techniques is the key.....
